IDK a this appears to be a Caravan based pickup which wouldn’t have been the worst thing. Also long at didn’t replace the actual 1/2 ton, which I’m sure it wasn’t really mean to. I think this most likely would have replaced the Dakota, and I’d be fine with that. Altho that front e nd is a bit Ford-y

Around ’97 or so my dad was considering moving from his Rover 109 to a larger work truck, and checked out Ram - didn’t end up getting one, but we might still have the promotional VHS somewhere.

Nope, it was in the running as the 2nd gen Ram design, called the Louisville Slugger.

That was a body-on-frame second gen Ram prototype. It was going to be a shared platform with full size vans . Chrysler then came to their senses and realized that pickup buyers want macho styling, and started the uber-MURRICA pickup truck styling trend.

So basically t would be like if Nissan just sold this with the back chopped off, instead of the Titan

The proportions need fixing, but that’s a significantly better design than what we got. The 90s ram was a blundering, bulbous mess.

It does look like a futuristic version of this:

Looks like a factory Caravan pickup, 10/10 would buy.

Funny enough, a Caravan pickup would be 75% more truck than most buyers would ever need.

Well, it wasn’t too far off from the design languages Ford and GM were using or getting ready to use, and it would have allowed Chrysler to economically replace the long in the tooth Ram van (which ended up soldi ering on for years, until succeeded by a rebadged Sprinter).

However, definitely a relic of past thinking. Shows that the designers still thought of pickups as purely tools for work, to be designed in a purely functional, rational manner. Dodge's own experiences with things like the Lil Red Express should have clearly proven that to no longer be the case. They made the smarter choice, with a highly stylized mini big rig look that appealed to white collar commuters and families looking to replace their Pontiac Safari wagons as much as it did farmers and construction workers.
